Soccer Drills - Endurance

Can't last the full game? Work on your stamina!

Far too often do we see teams that have a fantastic start to a game. They look quick, fast and more energetic than their opponents. They might even score a couple of goals and look like the sure winner of the game. However, somethings happens during the second half of the game and they can't keep up with their own tempo. In those scenarios most coaches probably wish that they would have practiced a bit more efficient during the pre-season. But don't worry with our drills your player's endurance will increase alongside other key skills.

Warm Up Game - Tic Tac Toe

Set Up:

Set up 3 x 3 fields – use cones or big hoops. Set up two starting stations approx. 10m in front of field. Build two teams of 1-4 players per set up – Each team lines up at one of the stations. Provide 3 matching colored markers – (bib, cones, balls, etc.).

Execution:

This exercise follows almost the same rules as the classic Tic Tac Toe: To win the game a team must place their 3 markers in a row – Diagonal, horizontal or vertical. On the Coach’s signal the first player of each team starts running towards the field and places his first marker in one of the 9 areas. After marking the first area the player runs back to tab the next waiting player, which then starts running towards the field – Same execution for third player.

After all 3 markers have been placed in the field, one marker at a time can now be replaced by each following player, until one team wins – 3 markers in a row. Play several rounds as a competition – Best of 5 or 7.

Passing Circle - Pass & Go: Follow your own Pass

Set Up:

Build a circle of approx. 12m with cones. 4-6 player are lining up outside of the circle. 1 Ball - There has to be a second player behind the ball possessing player before the exercise starts.

Execution:

The ball possessing player plays the first pass. Then the passing player follows his own pass and looks to replace the player that he passed the ball to. Maximum of 2 ball touches per player allowed. For more intensity try a wider circle with longer passes, less players or different exercises after passing.

Season break plan

We have put together a simple training program for all healthy players which can be done by themselves. We suggest to practice the exercises in this plan at least two times a week, while strengthening the upper body (abdominals, back muscles, arms, shoulders) on the remaining days. Some suggestions for simple but effective upper body exercises include: planks, crunches and push ups.

VIEW FULL DRILL

3+3 versus 3 - The majority game

Set Up:

Build a circle of approx. 12m with cones or use the center circle. You need 3 Teams of each 3 players and 1 ball.

Execution:

Two of the three teams will play together (Offense) versus one defending team.

The two ball possessing teams (white & orange in the beginning) try to stay in possession by passing the ball as efficiently as possible. The exercise starts with an un-challenged pass. If the defending team can gain ball possession, they must clear the ball first by dribbling outside the circle before they can start passing the ball.

The team of the player that lost the ball will now be the new defending team (white team in video) – The other team (orange) now plays with the new ball possessing team (blue).

Without passing and dribbling there is no scoring

Scoring and winning is the ultimate goal of any football game. Whether a volley shot, bicycle kick, header or instep drive. Any technique can be improved by practicing it during your soccer training sessions. However, without an effective passing game or a perfect dribbling, there would not even be a chance to score. Therefore, coaches should always combine several skills in their session plans. Shots on the goal are perfect for engaging in small-field games or passing drills.
